Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism

A year two top-up of the Introductory Diploma, this qualification delves deeper into the interrelationships within the sector, with project work and practical applications within the sector.

It is made up of a further nine specialist units covering the local industries of travel, tourism, and hospitality. It supports progress into employment and carries UCAS points.

The units are:

marketing for travel and tourism
specialist tourism
storytelling for tourism
business travel
resort representative roles and responsibilities
UK heritage tourist attractions
work experience in travel and tourism
the UK conference and event industry
leadership and human resources.

In this second year, you will build on your foundational knowledge and skills, advancing your expertise and readiness for the industry. You will deepen your understanding of global geography, key tourist destinations, and cultural landmarks. This advanced knowledge enables you to provide detailed and insightful advice to travellers, enhancing your ability to recommend destinations and experiences tailored to individual preferences. You will explore lesser-known attractions and gain a comprehensive understanding of local customs and traditions, further enriching your ability to create personalised travel plans.

To prepare for the broad range of career opportunities available, the course will offer insights into various roles within the travel and tourism industry, both domestically and internationally. You will explore career paths such as travel consultancy, tour operations, event management, and hospitality. You will gain practical experience through work placements providing valuable hands-on learning, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Apply

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English, plus a merit or above on the Introductory Diploma.

Full time for one year from September to July, including a minimum of 30 hours’ work experience in a customer-facing role in travel and tourism.

Assessment is coursework-based through assignments comprising written reports, presentations, visual displays, and practical and applied workplace simulations.

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies. If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000. If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support. You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course). * If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement. It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.

Potential roles include tourist guide, travel agency manager, customer relations advisor, reservation agent, travel account manager, business travel manager, resort representative, travel coordinator, passenger service agent, cruise ship worker, or air cabin crew.

The two-year Extended Diploma equips students with highly transferable skills, making it an ideal choice for those still exploring their future career path. These skills are valued across many industries.

The qualification also carries UCAS points and supports progression to further study, including HNC/Ds in Tourism or Hospitality Management, BA degrees in Tourism, Tourism Management, Air Transport and Operations, Business and Management, or Hospitality Management. It also opens pathways to Apprenticeships and Higher Apprenticeships in Travel Services.
