Could this BE any cuter? Animal Care welcomes first gecko hatchling
PUBLISHED 13-05-2025

The animal care department was over the moon when COPC’s very first newborn gecko hatched this Sunday.
The hatchling, who has been named Joey, is just three days old and one inch long. Joey is a pictus gecko just like his mother Monica, who arrived from America back in March alongside her three vivarium roommates – Rachel, Phoebe, and Janice (notice a theme there?). A member of the team spotted the egg when getting the lizards settled into their new home, and nearly two months later, a star was born (or rather, hatched!). Although they don’t officially know the gender yet, as it can take upwards of a year to accurately sex a gecko, they are hoping Joey is a boy.
Joey will stay in the capable hands of our animal care team and be an excellent learning opportunity for our lucky students once he has settled in a bit longer.
