For those who love to read and discuss their ideas about texts. It is a traditional academic course that is valued by universities and provides students with skills that will be very useful for further study.

- drama and poetry pre-1900, including Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
- comparative and contextual study, including two Gothic prose texts
- non-exam assessment exploring poetry, a novel and a play.
Do you love to read? Do you enjoy unpicking a literary text to find the deeper, hidden meanings? Studying English Literature gives you a unique opportunity to hone your skills of analysis and argument, as well as challenging you to question your own and others’ ideas. You will study a range of literary texts and genres as well as the contexts in which they were written. You will use literary theories to pose your own questions about the texts and develop your own ideas.
English Literature works well in combination with other subjects like Classical Civilisation, History, Law, Media Studies and Film Studies. Our students often go on to study degrees in subjects such as English, journalism, media, education and law.
